No, New Year's Day isn't what it once was.
But it's still pretty darn good.
The schedule isn't quite packed the way it used to be back in the old days, and yeah, I do miss those 11 a.m. starts for the Outback Bowl (who thought it was a good idea to move this one to 1 p.m., anyway?), but for all of the damage the college football powers-that-be have done to January 1st, we still have six games to enjoy this New Year's Day, including the grand old Rose Bowl (always a treat, even when it is forced to host a stunningly average team such as, you know, Wisconsin) and a very intriguing Orange Bowl featuring a team that, according to Kirk Herbstreit, has no right to be there.
In other words, we're in for a pretty good day of football.
You can get my picks for all of this year's New Year's Day games here, in Part III of our ongoing 2012 college football bowl preview.
