Pinkel Defends Paterno, Calls Him a 'Great Man'

By , About.com GuideJuly 18, 2012

Will we ever stop talking about Penn State, Jerry Sandusky and Joe Paterno?

Probably not. The latest evidence of the universality of this sad story came from, all places, SEC Media Days, where Missouri coach Gary Pinkel--perhaps not so wisely--spoke up about Paterno's legacy, which has quite understandably come into question in the wake of revelations that he apparently knew about, but did not act on, allegations against Sandusky as early as 2001.

Speaking to reporters during the SEC media event, however, Pinkel said that, despite the scandal, "you can't take away the greatness of this man." Said Pinkel: "He was a great man, and you can't, however you analyze this, all of a sudden erase all that this guy's done. You can't do that. Nobody can do that."
