2012 College Football APR Scores

By

College football's Academic Progress Rate (APR) is merely a curiosity now--some for some college football programs to brag about, and something that others have to somehow explain away. In the future, it will loom a great deal larger over the college football world; indeed, a school's APR starting in 2012-2013 could bring tougher penalties than ever before.

The APR system was created to track, in essence, how well college football programs ensure that their student-athletes progress through college and eventually graduate. APR tracks metrics such as eligibility, retention and graduate rate as a means to measure the academic success of a program.

Programs that score below 925 in the APR measure can be subject to sanctions ranging from formal reprimand to practice restrictions, scholarship reductions to bowl bans. Starting with the 2012-2013 year, however, the threshold for participating in postseason play--currently set at 900--will be raised to 930. It's a massive change that has put programs across the country on notice; either they must improve their academic performance, or they'll suffer the consequences.

This year's APR analysis covers the four-year period from 2007-08 through 2010-11. Among the top performers in the latest APR report are such academic powers as Northwestern University, Duke University, Rice University and Vanderbilt University. But also performing well were football powers Ohio State University, Boise State University and Clemson University.

In a statement released along with the latest APR figures, NCAA President Mark Emmert said he was mostly pleased with the results. Said Emmert: ""We expect student-athletes to meet their dual responsibilities, and most of them are doing so."
