Rutgers Stadium Expansion Likely to be Scaled Back

Friday July 11, 2008
Well, it's official: The horrible economy is now impacting college football.

Because of rising costs for concrete, steel and, of course, gas, bids for the planned expansion of Rutgers Stadium have come in much higher than Rutgers officials had expected.

The result? The once-massive expansion is likely to be scaled back.

Reports suggest that while plans for the addition of 1,000 "club seats" -- in other words, the seats for rich people -- will go ahead as planned, other phases of the expansion, including the addition of 13,000 new seats for less-wealthy fans and a proposed "recruiting lounge," may be scrapped.

And while University officials have made no formal announcement about the future of the much-ballyhooed project, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano -- who has been pushing the school to upgrade its facilities for the past several years -- is probably getting nervous.
